Cashman Speaks

Here is a statement from Brian Cashman from Yankees.com:
"I know I've said it before, but it's an incredible opportunity and honor to hold the title of general manager for the New York Yankees. With it comes a great responsibility to ownership, the people who wear the uniform and our fan base.

"I've got a job to finish here. That's the bottom line.

"I consider coming off a season where we didn't reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993 as a personal challenge. I've never been one to run from a challenge, and I look forward to having the chance to go after this thing again."

Cashman Coming Back

From Kat O'Brien:
Brian Cashman has agreed to return as the Yankees general manager on a three-year contract, Newsday has learned.

Cashman deliberated over the decision about whether it was time to move on after 11 seasons as GM, but gave the Yankees an affirmative answer this afternoon. In the end, a Yankees source said, it came down to what was best for his family. The new contract will be for slightly more than Cashman had been making, putting it at in the ballpark of $2-million per year.

Neither Cashman nor Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner, with whom Cashman negotiated the deal, could immediately be reached for comment. The two work closely together, and met at Yankee Stadium on Monday, and that relationship was a huge positive for Cashman in making up his mind.

The Yankees are expected to make an official announcement this afternoon.
Although there are some Yankees fans that are probably not happy about this, if you've read this blog enough you know I am. Having to find a new GM would have made improving this team through free agency and the trade market much more difficult this off-season, so I think this is a good move for the Yanks as they look towards 2009.

Torre Wants To Return for Stadium's Closing Ceremonies

There is a great article about Joe in USA Today (hat tip to Peter Abraham), I think you should all check it out. At the end Torre mentions that he would like to return to The Stadium one final time for the closing ceremonies.
Torre, who got a congratulatory call from Cashman the day the Dodgers clinched the NL West title, will be back in New York after the World Series. He and Ali are hosting a reunion of the 1998 World Series championship team at their Safe at Home Foundation dinner Nov. 7. The Yankees plan to have a final ceremony two days later at the Stadium.

"I would like to go," says Torre, who plans to get a couple of seats from the stadium. "It would be nice to say good-bye.

"I came from a very special place. It's tough to compare Yankee Stadium to anything else. Hopefully, we can create some new memories here."
The Yankees better not screw this one up. He wants to be there so they better invite him. I don't know if Hank and Hal realize how bad the organization will look if they don't. It's bad enough they didn't acknowledge him during the ceremony at the final game.

Five Reasons The Yankees Are Not Playing In October

1) Injuries: Mainly the season-enders to Chien-Ming Wang and Jorge Posada, those were the real killers. Not only did they lose a guy who is 54-20 with a 3.79 ERA in his career, but they lost a guy who usually pitches into the 7th inning of games. So he would have helped the team two ways; by pitching like he normally does, and by saving the pen from being overworked. Also remember who replaced him in the rotation; Sidney Ponson.

Derek Jeter is the captain, but Jorge Posada is the vocal leader of the team and has been for years. He also is one of the best hitting catchers in the game. Losing Posada hurt this lineup a lot, and was a big reason why they scored under 800 runs this year. He was replaced by Jose Molina, who did a very good job, but did not hit anywhere close to how Jorge would have, and Ivan Rodriguez, who was virtually invisible as a Yankee.

You have to believe that if both these two stayed healthy this year the Yankees would have been at least six games better.

2) Didn’t beat up on weak teams: The Yankees had a 38-27 record against teams with a losing record, which is OK, but not what you would expect from a team that was supposed to make the playoffs. For example the Red Sox went 46-18 against teams with a losing record.

And to break it down a little more, their record vs. these teams was particularly unacceptable:

Indians: 3-4
Pirates: 1-2
Royals: 5-5
Rangers: 3-4
Reds: 1-2
Tigers: 2-4

that’s a grand total of 15-21.

3) Relied too heavily on the kids: Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy combined for a 0-8 record with a 7.45 ERA. When you rely on two rookies to make up 40% of your starting staff this is what you are risking. Young pitchers struggle, it’s very normal, which is why the real problem wasn’t even these two but the fact that the Yankees did not have an adequate backup plan if the two had growing pains. And as we saw they both did.

4) 789 runs: Where was that potent Yankees offense? How this team was held to two runs on less in 50 games this year I will never understand. Before the season I really thought this team had a chance to score 1000 runs, well they sure proved me wrong.

The loss of Posada hurt, but still they should have done better than 789 runs. I mean come on, the freaking Minnesota Twins scored 829 runs, and they have two guys who can actually hit that ball in that lineup.

So what caused this? It was a combination of things. As I said the Posada injury hurt, so did Matsui’s injury. The sub-par seasons from Cano and Melky and lack of clutch hitting from Giambi and A-Rod also were major factors in this team’s poor offensive performance. But even with all of that, they still should have scored at least 850 runs.

5a) Complacency: Just because they started off slowly last year and made the playoffs didn’t mean they could do the same this year. I truly believe that last year’s slow start and late season turn around gave this team a false sense of security this season. They probably felt they could turn things on when they needed to and they would make the playoffs, well it didn’t work out that way.

And why didn't it work out that way this year?

5b) Tough division: The Yankees finished with a record of 89-73, the fourth best record in the American League, and finished 3rd in their division. That’s just unfair. Remember, the 2000 Yankees won 87 games and won the World Series.

Would You Sign Derek Lowe?

Today in Newsday Ken Davidoff offers up some advice for the Yankees and Mets. One of the main things he thinks the Yankees should do is sign Derek Lowe. Here's what he had to say:
Go after Derek Lowe, very hard. He's perfect. He can handle the AL East and the Rivalry, and he won't get crazy years. Offer him crazy money ($15 million per season?) over three years.
Lowe had a very good season in '08, going 14-11, with a 3.24 ERA, and a 1.13 WHIP. But it's also worth mentioning that he did this in AAA......... I'm sorry, the NL West.

The last time Lowe pitched in the AL East was in 2004, and he went 14-12, with a 5.42 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. The year before that he had a 4.47 ERA and a WHIP of 1.42. And this was when the AL East only had two good teams. Since then he's had four sub-4.00 ERA seasons with the Dodgers.

I wouldn't do it, I just don't think he'd be anywhere near as effective in the AL. But what about you, would you sign Lowe for next year?

More Problems for Joba's Shoulder?

From George A. King III:

For the second time inside of two months, Joba Chamberlain experienced discomfort in his valuable right shoulder Sunday at Fenway Park.

According to several people, Chamberlain said the shoulder was tight after exiting the first game of the doubleheader against the Red Sox when he walked Jason Bay and gave up a ground-rule double to Mark Kotsay in the eighth inning.

The same people said Chamberlain didn't appear too concerned about it. However, Chamberlain is the face of the Yankees' pitching future and the slightest physical problem with him is cause for concern. Especially with the Yankees targeting starting pitching as the No. 1 area they have to upgrade this winter.

According to a scout who recently tracked Chamberlain, tightness could be why his velocity was down during the final two weeks of the season.

"He was throwing 91 mph and a lot of sliders," the scout said of Chamberlain, whose fastball was clocked at 97-98 mph before he spent almost a month on the DL with rotator-cuff tendinitis.

When you bring up the main things Yankees fans don't want to hear, Joba and shoulder issues is one of them, at least it is be for me. Hopefully the rest between now and spring training will do him some good. If healthy this kid could be one of the best pitchers in the game, he has the best stuff I've ever seen. But if he can't then what?

Could this be another disaster in the making? Another Kerry Wood or Mark Prior - A ton of talent, but an arm that doesn't want to cooperate.

One thing I will say that might make this news a little less harsh is that it's coming from George King, and writes for the NY Post. And as we are all aware they've been known to lie and mislead at times. Not only with sports, but with everything they print, so you never know. Hopefully this is another case of NY Post bullshit.

Caldera: Time for Yanks to get creative

How will they get creative? Well Pete Caldera has some ideas. Here are several trade possibilities he suggests for the Yanks.

For the pitching staff:
As a trade target, Kansas City right-hander Zack Greinke’s name has been floated, since he’s approaching the expensive years of his arbitration-eligible status. This year, Greinke, 24, was 13-10, with a 3.47 ERA in a little more than 200 innings, and he totaled 183 strikeouts.

Oakland’s Justin Duchscherer, 30, isn’t a free agent until after next season, and he’s had hip issues that compromise his trade value. But he is a front-line talent who might become available during the ’09 season, following this summer’s movement of rotation mates Rich Harden and Joe Blanton.

For the outfield:

Colorado’s Matt Holliday (.321, 25, 88) is owed $13.5 million next season, a year before he’s eligible for free agency. Holliday, 28, as a left fielder could push Johnny Damon back to center field, and move Xavier Nady to right field — provided that the Yankees deny Bobby Abreu’s request for a multi-year deal.

Kansas City’s David DeJesus, 30, certainly could improve the club’s athleticism; the former Rutgers star, with similar stats (.307, 12, 73) to Damon plays all three outfield spots.

For first base:

One intriguing target is Colorado’s Garrett Atkins, 28, another productive hitter whose increasing arbitration-aided salaries might tempt the Rockies to deal now. Atkins’ on-base percentage plunged to .328, from .409 two years ago.

I'd take either of the two pitchers in a heartbeat, especially Greinke. 24 years old and he had a 3.47 ERA in 200+ innings in the AL? Where do I sign?

I'm not as sold on Duchscherer, but like I said, I'd take him. The Yanks desperately need starting pitching.

On to the outfield; Dejesus had a sub-par year defensively, which bothers me a bit. If the Yanks are going to bring in a center fielder, he needs to be very good defensively. I still have no problem with the Yankees sticking with Gardner.

Holiday is a very good ballplayer, but he will cost an arm and a leg so it depends on what Colorado would want in return.

As for first base, Atkins is a decent option, but Mark Teixeira and Casey Kotchman are much better options. And Atkins' splits scare me, he's a .342/.380/.523 hitter at home, and just a .233/.278/.383 hitter on the road. Seems like a Coors Field hitter to me. I'd stay away.

Reader Poll: What bothers you more?

I've been thinking about this one for a while, pretty much since I knew the Yankees were not making the playoffs. But what is more upsetting to the average Yankees fan; missing the playoffs, or moving to a new stadium?

I'm much more upset the Yankees are moving out of Yankee Stadium, even if it is just across the street. I've rooted for teams that have missed the playoffs in their respective sports, including those Yankee teams from the late 80's and early 90's, but I've never rooted for a team that left the greatest stadium on the planet. The new place will be very nice, but in my opinion it will never be the same.

The poll is on the left sidebar, so please take a few seconds to vote. Thank you.

I will be closing the "Should the Yankees sign Manny Ramirez" poll. The final results of that poll were 39% (457) said 'Yes', 47% (667) said 'No', and 5% (56) people were 'Undecided'. Thank you all for voting.

Yanks to leave Joba in starting rotation?

In what I assume will be the first of many of these posts over the off-season, it appears that the Yankees are leaning towards keeping Joba as a starter.

From Peter Abraham:
Joba Chamberlain finished the season having thrown only 100 1/3 innings because of a shoulder injury that caused him to miss a month. If the Yankees stick to their organizational beliefs, the 23-year-old right-hander will be limited to 140 innings next season.

Like many teams, the Yankees believe the research that shows young pitchers should have their workload increased gradually.

But after two seasons of treating the 235-pound Chamberlain with great care, the Yankees might be ready to just let him pitch in 2009.

Chamberlain wants to start next season in the rotation, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi sounded inclined to grant that wish yesterday.

"Will the inning restrictions be there next year? Possibly," Girardi said. "But he's going to be a year stronger. He's got 100 innings, and part of that was rehabbing a little bit. It's something we'll discuss."
"There are a lot of different things where you can be creative," Girardi said. "If you have depth in your rotation, (Chamberlain doesn't) have to make 32 starts like everybody else. ... You skip a start here, those type of things."

Chamberlain was glad to hear that the team's thinking might be changing.

"I've told them what I want to do. I've talked to Joe about it," he said. "Obviously we want to do what's best for the team. I'm sure we will."
After seeing what he could do as a starter this season, I'm convinced that's where he needs to be. Next year the bullpen should be fine, it's the starting rotation that has me worried.

Rivera Will Have Surgery

From Tyler Kepner:
Mariano Rivera has decided to have arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Oct. 6 to remove a calcification on the AC joint. Rivera is expected to be ready for spring training.
He'll be ready by spring training, so nobody should be that concerned. There are always added concerns about a pitcher's shoulder, but Mo should be fine.

Moose Wins 20th In Opener...

... but Yanks drop the nightcap 4-3. But seriously, who cares about the second game anyway? Yea, 90 wins would have been nice, but it doesn't really matter. Anyway, let me first say congrats to Moose on his first 20 win season, this was long overdue. And second, you better not freaking retire.

Mussina was great, he threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, two walks, and struck out three. He finishes the year 20-9 with a 3.37 ERA. After the first four starts he was 1-3 with a 5.75 ERA, and I thought it was going to be another down year for Mussina, but boy was I wrong. Since that start on April 17th against the Red Sox, Mussina went 19-6 with a 3.10 ERA.

The big blow of the game came off the bat of Xavier Nady, a three-run homer off Matsuzaka in 4th that put the Yankees up for good.

But the game was not without its nervous moments, though. The Red Sox had runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 8th, and eventually cut a 3-0 Yankees' lead down to a 3-2 lead, but then Mo came in, bad shoulder and all, and struck out Pedroia to end the 8th with the tying run on first.

In the top half of the 9th the Yanks added three very big insurance runs off of Jonathan Papelbon to give Mo all the runs he'd need, and that was it. Mo retired the Sox easily in the 9th and Moose had his 20th win.

The Yanks closed out the 2008 season with a 4-3 loss to the Sox tonight in ten innings. No big deal, this was the definition of a meaningless game.

I have to give the Yanks some credit, tonight they trailed the game 3-1 in the top of the 9th and fought back to tie the game when they easily could have gone down without a fight.

I also give them credit for playing some good baseball down the stretch, in fact it was their best baseball of the season. They went 17-9 in September, won 9 of their last 11, and 12 of their last 15. It surely doesn't make me feel better about missing the playoffs, but at least they have something to build off of going into 2009.

This Week In Yankees History

September 28th - October 4th

September 28th

1885 - Former Yankees P Wilbur “Lefty” Good (1905) was born.(1885-1963) Lefty was 0-2 in 5 games for the Yankees in 1905. In 1908, he was traded to the Indians, where he became an outfielder.

1892 - Former Yankees 2B Jack Fournier (1918) was born (1892-1973). Jack hit .350 in 27 games for the Yankees in 1918.

1895 - Former Yankees OF Lawton “Whitey” Witt (1922-25) was born. (1895-1988) Whitey was obtained from the A’s in 1922. He was a good hitter and solid outfielder. He was sold to the Dodgers after the 1925 AL season.

1923 - The Yankees overwhelm the Red Sox by the score of 24-4, among the battered Boston pitchers was Howard Ehmke, who straggler through 6 innings, allowing 17 runs with 21 hits. Yankees Babe Ruth and Aaron Ward hit HRs in Fenway Park that day.

1928 - The Yankees clinch their 6th AL pennant by defeating the Tigers by the score of 11-6, behind starting pitcher George Pipgras.

1930 - Lou Gehrig’s 885 consecutive game errorless streak at 1st base ends during a Yankees’ 9-3 win against the Red Sox. This game also featured a rare pitching performance by Babe Ruth, who hurled an 11-hit complete game win.

1942 - Former Yankees P Grant Jackson (1976) was born. Grant was obtained from the Orioles in June of 1976 in the Doyle Alexander trade. He went 6-0 in 21 games with 1 save. In the fall of 1976, the Yankees lost him to the Mariners in the AL expansion player draft.

1949 - Former Yankees minor league INF Mario Guerrero was born. Mario was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1968. Mario never appeared with the Yankees at the MLB level. On June 30, 1972, Mario was sent by the Yankees to the Red Sox to complete an earlier deal made on March 22, 1972. The Yankees sent a player to be named later and 1B Danny Cater to the Red Sox for P Sparky Lyle. The Yankees sent INF Mario Guerrero on June 30, 1972 to the Red Sox to complete the trade.

1951 - Former Yankees P Dave Rajsich (1978) was born. Dave was signed as a free agent by the Yankees in 1974. He appeared in 4 games with no record in 1978. Then during the winter of 1978, he was traded to the Rangers in the Sparky Lyle-Dave Righetti trade. His brother Gary also played in the MLB.

1951 - Yankees starter Allie Reynolds pitched his 2nd no-hitter of the 1951 AL season as the Yankees defeat the Red Sox by the score of 8-0, in the opener of a doubleheader. He becomes the 1st AL pitcher to throw 2 no-hitters in a season. The game is best remembered for C Yogi Berra’s muff of a pop foul by Ted Williams, always a though out and the last batter in the 9th inning. Fortunately, Reynolds induced Williams to hit the same foul pop and this time Yogi Berra caught the ball. The Yankees clinched the 1951 AL pennant with an 11-3 victory in the nightcap, behind Yankees starter Vic Raschi.

1958 - The Yankees finish the 1958 AL season with a doubleheader sweep of the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. They would end the 1958 season with a 92-61-1 record. In the 1st game, the Yankees 7-0 win as starter Don Larsen picks up his 9th victory. A Marv Thronberry solo HR and Norm Seibern hits 2-HRs for the Yankees. In the 2nd game, Yankees win by a score of 6-3. As Yankees starter Tom Sturdivant picks up his 3rd victory with relief help from pitchers Bobby Shantz and Zack Monroe, who picks up his 3rd save of the 1958 AL season.

1958 - Former Yankees P Pete Filson (1987) was born. Pete was drafted by the Yankees in the 9th round of the 1979 amateur player draft. On May 12, 1982, Pete was traded by the Yankees along with INF Larry Milbourne, P John Pacella, and cash to the Twins for C Butch Wynegar and P Roger Erickson. On January 5, 1987, Pete was traded by the White Sox along with INF Randy Velarde to the Yankees for P Scott Nielsen and Mike Soper (minors). Pete went 1-0 in 7 games for the Yankees in 1987. He spent the 1988 season at Columbus (IL).

1960 - The Yankees win their 12th game, beating the Senators by a score of 6-3, as Whitey Ford finishes the 1960 AL season with a 12-9 record. The Yankees hitting attack is paced by Mickey Mantle’s 2-HR’s for 3 runs and a solo HR by Clete Boyer. Yankees starter Whitey Ford only goes 5 innings before getting relief help from pitchers Jim Coates and Louis Arroyo, who gets his 7th save of the 1960 season.

1970 - Former Yankees minor league P Mike DeJean was born. Mike was drafted by the Yankees in the 24th round of the 1992 amateur player draft. He never played for the Yankees at the MLB level. On November 20, 1995, Mike was traded by the Yankees to the Rockies for C Joe Girardi.

1978 - Ron Guidry wins his 24th game of the 1978 season, with a 4-hit, 3-1 win over the Blue Jays. Yankees OF Roy White has a great game driving in the Yankees 1st run and robbing former Yankees teammate Otto Velez of a late inning HR that would have tie the game. Their lead in the AL East remains at 1 game.

1999 - The Yankees defeat the Orioles at Camden Yards, by a score of 9-5. The Birds chase Yankees starter Ed Yarnall for 7-hits, 5 runs, but Ramiro Mendoza and Mo Rivera hold the Birds, so the Yankees can come back for the victory. Tino Martinez hits a HR for the Yankees.

2001 - At Yankee Stadium, starter Mike Messina throws a complete game a 3-hitter, 7-0 victory against his former Orioles teammates. The Yankees hitting attack is led by a Bernie Williams HR and Tino Martinez’s double and triple.

2005 - Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez hits his 47th HR in the Yankees 2-1 victory over the Orioles. His shot broke Joe DiMaggio’s-season club record for HRs by a right-handed batter, set in 1937.

2007 - The Red Sox clinch the AL East title, bringing to an end a streak of 9 consecutive division titles by the Yankees, dating back to 1998. The Yankees will not miss the Postseason however, having clinched the American League Wild Card.

September 29th

1886 - Former Yankees P Edwin “Cy” Pieh (1913-15) was born (1886-1945). Cy went 9-9 in 43 games for the Yankees.

1901 - Former Yankees reserve C Anthony “Pug’” Rensa (1933) was born (1901-1987). Pug hit .310 in 8 games as a back up catcher for the Yankees in 1933.

1911 - The Yankees draw 13 walks and steal 15 bases in a wild 16-12 win against the Browns. The game also features a MLB record 6 stolen bases in one inning, the second inning.

1914 - Former Yankees P John “Swede” Johnson (1944) was born. John went 0-2 in 22 games for the Yankees in 1944.

1920 - Yankees OF Babe Ruth hits his MLB record 54th HR on the last day of the 1920 AL season. Only one other team in the American League will hit more than 44 homers.

1921 - It’s the 4th game of the crucial series with the Indians. Yankees are in 1st place by 1 1/2 games. Yankees manager Miller Huggins asks his players to select as their starting pitcher.
