News & Notes

- Joba Chamberlain has faced the Mariners three times - all in relief, and is 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA. In 3.2 innings he's allowed a runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

- In seven games - one start - Brandon Morrow is 1-0 witha 4.76 ERA against the Yankees. The win coming in his only start last year in Seattle. That day he held the Yanks to just one run on one hit, walked three and struck out eight. However, in five relief appearances at the old stadium he had a 13.50 ERA. In 3.1 innings of work he got lit up for five earned on seven hits and four walks.

- The Yanks come into this game on a five-game winning streak. They had previously lost 9 of 13.

- At 43-32 the Yanks are 11 games over .500, which matches their high-water mark for the season. The last time they were 11 over was on June 8th and then immediately went on that 4-9 slide. Hopefully that's not what happens this time around.

- According to Peter Abraham, Eric Hinske's plane is being delayed so he's not with the team yet and may not be there for the game tonight. Until he arrives the Yanks will not make any roster moves.

Yankees vs. Mariners Series Preview

Yankees vs. Mariners
New Yankee Stadium
(3 games)

After taking care of business against the injury-riddled Mets at Citi Field, the Yanks head home for a three-game series with the Mariners. It's the first time the two teams have met this season, last year the Yanks won seven of the nine games against Seattle. Heading into this series the Yanks have won five in a row and look like they're putting that tough 13-game stretch that saw them go 4-9 behind them. They are now 43-32 just 3.5 games behind the first place Red Sox in the division and sit a game and a half ahead of the hard-charging Rays.

Throughout June the Yankees have been pitching very well. For the month their team ERA is 3.49 which is almost a run better than their 4.28 ERA for the month of May, and over two runs better than their pitiful 5.79 ERA for the month of April. Now, to go along with the pitching, they've started to hit again, which is the reason for their five-game winning streak. If they can keep that up for a while this team will be a force to be reckoned with, but I've already said that a few times.

Seattle heads to The Bronx winners of 9 of their last 12 and are a surprising 39-36, just 3.5 games behind the Angels first in the AL West. They have some quality young arms on their pitching staff, including Felix Hernandez, who looks like he could be headed for his first Cy Young award. The 23-year-old is 8-3 with a 2.54 ERA and has struck out 107 in 109.2 innings. Luckily, the Yanks don't have to face him this series. They also won't be facing left-hander Erik Bedard either because he's on the DL. Like Hernandez, Bedard is having a great season. So far he's 5-2, with a 2.47 ERA. Jason Vargas, who the Yanks will face, has also had a solid year, going 3-3 with a 3.79 ERA in nine starts. He will start the Thursday game. Veteran Jarrod Washburn is also having a very solid start to his year, the Yanks will face him tomorrow.

Their bullpen has also been fantastic. Sean White, Shawn Kelley, Miguel Batista, and closer David Aardsma all have ERA's under 3.00, with White, Kelley and Aardsma are all under 2.00. Their bullpen ERA is the second best in baseball at 3.16, behind only the Red Sox who are at 2.89.

Seattle's problem has been their offense. They've scored the second fewest runs (291) in the game, ahead of only San Diego who has scored just 287. Thanks to Ichiro their team batting average is at a somewhat respectable .261. Besides Ichiro, Russell Branyan has also had a solid year, hitting .303/.400/.609 with a team leading 19 homers and 39 RBI. He trails only Jose Lopez for team lead in RBI. Ken Griffey Jr. is back with the M's, but is struggling. He's hitting .218/.332/.409 with 9 HR and 25 RBI, and even though he's probably a few months past the time he should have retired, he's probably good for at least one more homer in the Bronx, though I'd much rather see him go 0-for-the series.

I thought they should have swept the Mets heading into the weekend series and said so on this blog. I feel the same way about this series with the Mariners, they should at least take two of three. While the Mariners have played well lately, they've done it against NL teams - although they did take two of three from the Dodgers in LA - their team just lost Adrian Beltre to shoulder surgery, and the Yankees are the better team.

Players to Watch

YANKEES: Alex Rodriguez - It's not just a coincidence that the Yankees started when A-Rod started hitting again, so that's why, for the second series in a row, he's my Yankee to watch. In the last five games the third baseman is hitting .467/.667/.867 (that's an OPS of 1.533) with 2 homers and 9 RBI. The batting average for the year is still at an ugly .232, but he's got a solid .399 on-base % and he's slugging .484 and climbing.

A-Rod has done well against the team that drafted him throughout his career, hitting .287/.396/.597 with 29 HR and 75 RBI in 94 games. Last year, however, was not a good year for A-Rod against the M's. He hit a lame .150/.346/.150 with just one RBI in six games.

Rodriguez vs. Morrow: .286/.375/.714 (2-for-7) HR, 2 RBI, 3 strikeouts.
Rodriguez vs. Washburn: .370/.419/.593 (15-for-47) 6 HR, 10 RBI
Rodriguez vs. Vargas: He's never faced Vargas.

MARINERS: Ichiro Suzuki - Have we seen a better pure hitter in the last 20 years than Ichiro? Boggs and Gwynn are the only two I can think of that could be better. Currently he's leading baseball with a .372 batting average. He has 110 hits on the season, including 14 doubles, 3 triples, 13 stolen bases, and has hit 6 homers which ties his total in each of the past two seasons.

In 70 games against the Yanks in his career, Ichiro is hitting .320/.365/.423 with 6 HR, 25 RBI, and has stolen 19 bases. The numbers last year against the Yanks were not too impressive. Yankees pitching held Ichiro to a hitting line of .289/.289/.367 with a homer and 3 RBI. .289 may be good for some, but not for Ichiro. At the old stadium he hit .341/.372/.439 with 3 homers and 12 RBI in 37 games.

Ichiro vs. Chamberlain: 1-for-3 with a strikeout.
Ichiro vs. Pettitte: .400/.400/.433 (12-for-30) a double, 5 RBI, and 6 strikeouts.
Ichiro vs. Sabathia: .395/.395/.737 (15-for-38) two doubles, one triple, 3 HR, 4 RBI.

Injury Report

YANKEES:
- Xavier Nady, RF: 15-day DL with an injured right elbow. He played in two minor league rehab games before taking himself out of yesterday's game in the fifth after feeling something in his right elbow. Brian Cashman said this could be a "worst-case scenario" which likely means he could be done for the year.
- Jose Molina, C: On the 15-day DL with a strained left quad. He's begun baseball activities and could be back in as little as a week.
- Damaso Marte, RP: 15-day DL with a sore shoulder. He's played a lot of catch, but is still nowhere close to returning.

MARINERS:
- Adrian Beltre, 3B: Will miss 6-8 weeks after having shoulder surgery.
- Yuniesky Betancourt, SS: 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring.
- Endy Chavez, OF: 60-day DL with a torn ACL - done for the year.
- Erik Bedard, SP: 15-day DL with left shoulder inflammation.
- Carlos Silva, SP: 60-day DL with a right shoulder impingement.
- Shawn Kelly, RP: 15-day DL with a strained left olblique.
- Cesar Jimenez, RP: 60-day DL with left biceps tendinitis.
- Ryan Feierabend, SP/RP: 60-day DL after having left shoulder surgery - out for season.

Yanks Acquire Hinske *UPDATED - Pena to AAA*

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsuburgh Post-Gazette via MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Yanks have sent Eric Fryer and Casey Erickson over to the Pirates for Eric Hinske. According to Joel Sherman the Yankees will also be getting $400K to cover about half of what Hinske is owed for the remainder of the season. He will be in uniform at the stadium tonight. No word on any corresponding moves to make room on the roster, but I have to believe Cody Ransom or Ramiro Pena will be going to make room for him, and as I said earlier today I hope it's Ransom.

The 31-year-old is hitting .255/.373/.368 with a homer and 11 RBI in 54 games this year for the Pirates, and has played first, third, and the outfield this year.

In 21 games for Single-A Charleston, the 23-year-old Erickson was 3-3 with a 2.25 ERA, and in 44 innings allowed 11 earned runs on 51 hits, walked 13 and struck out 37. Playing for High-A Tampa, Eric Fryer, 23, was hitting .250/.333/.344 with 2 homers and 24 RBI in 59 games.

I don't see the need but it's an interesting move, I guess.

UPDATE 12:37 p.m.: This just popped up on Joel Sherman's Twitter page: "Interesting that Yanks are sending R.Pena to T-A to also play OF to become Omar Infante super-utility type for later this season."

So they're adding Hinske and optioning Ramiro Pena to Triple-A so he can play everyday and get some time in the outfield.

Ransom deserve a roster spot over Pena? I Don't Think So

Yesterday, Peter Abraham discussed what would happen with the Yankees roster when Jose Molina makes his return, a return that is not too far away. He could be back as soon as a few days from now.

Basically Pete says that the Yanks will keep Ransom and have to decided whether to send down Francisco Cervelli or Ramiro Pena if they decide to keep three catchers, or even send both down and call up a player like Shelley Duncan or John Rodriguez who are both having big years in Triple-A.

Now I understand that the Yanks want these guys to develop in the minors, but so far we've seen much more development out of these two at this level than we might have in all their time spent in the minors. Also, if the Yanks just don't want to carry three catchers that's perfectly fine, and the right thing to do then would be to send Cervelli to Scranton and let him play everyday.

But if they decided to send down Pena and keep Ransom it makes very little sense to me. I know it would probably mean they'd have to lose Ransom for good, but really, who cares? Do the Yankees really see that much value in this guy? Because I sure don't. Pena is a better fielder, he's faster, and while Ransom might be the better hitter, so far he hasn't shown it this season. In fact, I'll take that back, I don't even think Ransom is a better hitter, after all we are talking about a guy with a lifetime hitting line of .239/.325/.412.

The 2009 Yankees are a better team with Ramiro Pena, not Cody Ransom.

Yanks Sign Two Out of the Independent Leagues

The Yankees signed two independent leaguers over the past few days. On Sunday they signed left-handed pitchers Edwin Walker. Then yesterday they bought the rights to Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks third baseman Yurendell DeCaster.

DeCaster's contract was purchased from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and he will report to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees on Tuesday. Here's a little more on DeCaster (hat tip to Was Watching):

DeCaster, 29, joined the RedHawks this spring and was arguably the top player in the Northern League this season. Entering tonight's play, DeCaster was leading the Northern League in hits (54), doubles (14), home runs (13), RBI (43) and slugging percentage (.682). He was batting .344, good for fifth in the league, and was second in runs scored with 36.

DeCaster was selected to the Great Plains team for the 2009 Northern League All-Star Game earlier today and was the top vote-getter in the league but will not participate in the game.

"For my money, he is one of the best players to ever come through the Northern League, and that is the caliber of player we like to have in RedHawks uniforms" said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. "We knew this day was coming and we are glad he can continue his career at the Triple-A level. Hopefully we can see him in Yankee Stadium sometime soon."

DeCaster was part of the surprising Dutch team at this year's WBC. He was the guy who hit the ball that Willy Aybar couldn't handle that sent the Dominican Republic to an early exit. In 23 WBC at-bats DeCaster hit .217/.308/.304 with two doubles and two RBI in 23 at-bats at for the Netherlands.

DeCaster has also played over 1067 minor-legue games in the Rays, Pirates and the Nationals. In his minor league career he's hitting .262/.332/.438. He's primarily been a third baseman, but he can also play first and a the outfield.

Here's some info on Walker from RailcatsBaseball.com (hat-tip to The Voice of Yankees Universe):
Hard-throwing left-hander Edwin Walker has been sold to the New York Yankees where he will report to the Charleston RiverDogs (A) of the South Atlantic League, the team announced today.

Walker, 25, becomes the 19th RailCats player – and ninth pitcher – sold to a major league organization since 2002. The Texan returns to the affiliated minor leagues after spending the first three seasons of his professional career (2002-04) with a pair of Milwaukee Brewers farm teams. The Brewers first drafted Walker in the ninth round in 2002 out of Highlands High School in San Antonio.

This season, Walker has been one of the best arms in an excellent RailCats bullpen, posting a 3.26 ERA in 19.1 innings and striking out a whopping 29 hitters. Walker picked up three saves in 16 outings, going 3-0 and holding opposing hitters to just a .194 average. Fargo-Moorhead was the only team in the Northern League to score runs off Walker in 2009, tagging the left-hander in three different appearances, otherwise Walker threw 18.0 scoreless innings against the league’s other four teams. Walker gave up only 14 hits – eight in three outings vs. Fargo – and walked ten.
Walker also played three years of rookie ball with the Brewers organization from 2002-2004, and in 28 games went 5-4, with a 5.09 ERA.

The Yankees have done a good job signing indy leaguers over the past few seasons, hopefully these two can help down the road.

6/29 Minor League Report

================

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight.
He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will
post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (43-32) beat Rochester (37-39) 5-0 in game 1 of today's doubleheader: Box Score - Recap

PITCHING: Ivan Nova, just promoted from AA Trenton, made his AAA debut for SWB. Nova flirted with a no-hitter until 2 outs in the 6th inning. The 22 year old righty was sitting 92-94 with his fastball, and showed a very nice curve, getting all 5 of his strikeouts on good curves. He worked fast and has a nice free and easy motion. Thru the first 5 innings he allowed only 2 base runners, a leadoff walk in the 2nd, and 2-out walk in the 4th. In the 6th, he walked the lead off man. He then picked up his 5th strikeout. The next batter hit a line drive single off the tip of shortstop Doug Bernier's glove that broke up the no-hit bid . He was then relieved by Albaladejo.
